Replace “How great was your experience?” with “How would you rate your experience?” Replace “Did you enjoy our new feature?” with “How would you rate our new feature?” Neutral phrasing gives customers permission to be honest and produces more accurate data.

Consistent Scales Throughout

If you use a 1-5 scale for your first satisfaction question, use 1-5 for all satisfaction questions in that survey. Switching between 1-5, 1-7, and 1-10 scales within the same survey confuses respondents and reduces data quality. The exception is the NPS question, which uses its own standard 0-10 scale and should be clearly labeled as such.

Always End with an Open-Ended Question

Your final question should always be an optional open-ended field like “Is there anything else you’d like us to know?” This catches everything your structured questions missed and signals to the customer that you genuinely want to hear their perspective beyond the predefined categories.
